It's the last hurrah for 2012 tonight and judging by the travel press, we'll have a lot of visitors for the celebration. Along with perennial favorites New York, Orlando and Waikiki, New Orleans is again making quite a few national lists, including at Away.com. because of "A good mix of things to do in New Orleans and a lot of things are free," says Away.com Senior Editor Kate Chandler.
New Orleans already owns Halloween and Mardi Gras, but we're starting to get well-known for our New Year's Eve bash too. Travel and Leisure ranked New Orleans as the #1 destination this year. The travel magazine rankings gives the Crescent City high marks for anything related to partying, but loses points for cleanliness.
Away.com has chosen the city as one of the best places to be tonight, as a still under-the-radar pick. Chandler says with the accessibility of the French Quarter to the fireworks, it's perfect for tourists. But they warn visitors to be on the lookout for people shooting guns at the stroke of midnight.
