An Alton man is in a New Orleans hospital after getting shot in a gunfight with St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputies on Christmas night.
The sheriff's office received a 911 call about 11 p.m. from a woman who said that she was with her family and that they were locked inside a house as her son-in-law was trying to break in. The woman said that the man, later identified as 40-year-old Antoine Tobias, was armed and acting extremely violent.
According to Capt. George Bonnett, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, "The incident began moments earlier at the Tobiases' house next door. Tobias' wife, fearful of his erratic and dangerous behavior, left the home with her two kids and fled to her parents' home next door."
By the time deputies arrived at the home on North 10th Street, Tobias had broken into the home and was inside with his wife, two children, mother-in-law and step father-in-law. He was still armed, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities surrounded the home, and "a deputy near a bathroom window made contact with the family, who had locked themselves in that room," said Bonnett.
The deputy helped all family members exit through the bathroom window and led them to safety.
After the family had escaped, Tobias came through the same window armed with the handgun.
"Once outside the house, Tobias fired multiple rounds at deputies," Bonnett said. "The deputies returned fire, striking Tobias multiple times. Tobias was also bitten by a K-9 dog during the incident."
Tobias was treated on the scene and taken to University Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening, according to the sheriff's office.

Upon his release, Tobias will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on one count of aggravated burglary and two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.
