The Slidell funeral of a Marine sergeant who was laid to rest Saturday was not the target of a radical protest group.

The Westboro Baptist Church group had posted on its web site that it planned to disrupt the funeral of Sergeant Michael Guillory, who lost his life in the line of duty last week.

However, according to Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith, the entire event was peaceful.

"Because of their attempt to insult Sgt. Guillory’s service and sacrifice, it brought everyone together and galvanized our community with a common spirit and a common goal," Smith told WWL-TV.

"I want to thank all of our local citizens, fellow Louisianans, and people from all around the country who showed up today to show support for Sgt. Guillory and his family," said Smith. "To Sgt. Guillory: Godspeed and our thanks. Our prayers are with your family during this hard time. Thank you for your service to our wonderful country.”

Guillory, who was 28, was killed when the truck he was riding in overturned. His body was returned to Slidell on Thursday and was greeted by hundreds of people who lined the streets.
