The search is on for a new U.S. Attorney

Political analysts say it's going to be a tall order to fill the shoes of former U.S. Attorney Jim Letten but U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu is sounding confident.

Landrieu told WWL First News that she has formed a committee to accept applications and they are already coming in.

''I'm confident that we can find someone that has an extraordinary background to step into that job,'' Landrieu said.

Landrieu said they should have a short list of names for President Obama to examine in a matter of weeks.  Landrieu also wants to be sure the scandal that unfolded on Letten's watch does not impact important cases.

''We have to have confidence that the office can meet out justice fairly with no prejudice, that is what's important,'' said Landrieu.

As the senior senator from Louisiana, Landrieu has the lions share of putting together a short list for President Obama, who will make the actual appointment.

Landrieu said she is also consulting with Senator David Vitter and Congressman Cedric Richmond about possible candidates.
