Suspect snared in Slidell serpent swipe

Slidell police say a local man is in jail after breaking into a pet store and stealing a cash register -- and three reptiles.

A reports of burglary brought police to Delta Pets at 1370 Corporate Square.  The owner reported finding the back door pried open.  Inside, he discovered a cash register was missing.  Also missing were three piece of inventory: a ball python valued at $600 and two boas.

Upon canvassing the area, officers noticed other businesses with pry marks on the doors, and an open door on a vacant building.  Inside they found a makeshift bed and three snakes, along with a jail identification bearing the name Donald Laigast, Jr.  Laigast had recently been in jail on burglary charges.

Police say when they caught up with Laigast, he admitted to stealing the snakes as a Christmas present for his son.  Laigast was booked on one count of simple burglary. Police say more charges are expected.
