"Early this morning, one of the units at the Shell / Motiva Norco Manufacturing Complex experienced a power loss due to a power supply interruption and electrical breaker malfunction. As a result we are experiencing elevated flaring accompanied by heavy smoke," a statement from the company said. "We are working with Entergy to restore power to the affected substations as quickly as possible."
Officials say this malfunction is not linked to the "elevated flaring" that started last weekend and continued into this week.
The company says there is no current public health or safety impact.
"We continue to conduct extensive monitoring around the site and in the community. No injuries have been reported associated with this situation, and air monitoring results indicate no environmental impact at this time," according to the statement.
