Suspect gets out of cuffs and escapes JPSO

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office is looking for a suspect who investigators say somehow got out of handcuffs and escaped from the investigations bureau interview room.

Cops say the suspect had robbed two people at gunpoint, and they caught him by tracking the iPhone he had allegedly stolen.

"This morning, around 1:00 am, our officers were dispatched to investigate an armed robbery in 2300 block of Alex Kornman in Harvey," Col. John Fortunato said in a news release.  "During this incident, a lone black male armed with a handgun, approached a male and female.

He says the suspect took a wallet and an iPhone during the robbery.  The victim had activated the tracking app on his phone.  Detectives used that information to located the stolen phone.

"Shortly thereafter, the phone was tracked to 2404 Rose Drive in Gretna," Fortunato explained.  "With the assistance of the Gretna Police Dept., investigators met at the Rose Drive address.  The iPhone was located and a suspect identified as Harry J. Mitchell was taken into custody for questioning."

Police took Mitchell to the JPSO Investigations Bureau, but he didn't stay there long.

"As a precaution, Mitchell was handcuffed while in an interview room.  At some point around 8:00 am, investigators discovered Mitchell was no longer in the interview room, noticing one of the cuffs was still attached to the floor plate," Fortunato said.

The JPSO has provided the following description of Mitchell:

Harry J. Mitchell, is a B/M, 24, 5'10, 150 pounds, brown eyes, black hair ear length with twists and dreads, thin mustache, a goatee.   He has tattoos of 504 on left forearm, the word Snuggs on his left forearm, Deshia is written on right forearm along with  a fleur-de-lis.  He was wearing a white t shirt blue jeans and black tennis shoes.
Fortunato asks anyone with information on the whereabouts of Harry Mitchell to call the Investigations Bureau at (504)364-5300, or Crimestoppers at (504)822-1111.
