Christmas New Orleans Style

New Orleans puts on its holiday best Sunday night.

French Quarter Festivals, Inc. will 'flip the switch' at Jackson Square for the 28th Christmas New Orleans Style at 5:50 Sunday evening at the Chartres Street gate.

Following the lighting, the sounds of the season will begin

"We have our very first cathedral concert...Theresa Andersson, who's returning after a small hiatus. And, before the Theresa Andersson concert at 6 o'clock, we'll invite people to join us at Jackson Square where we officially turn on the lights," says Executive Director Marci Schramm.

But don't expect any over-the-top illumination or light show.

"Jackson Square is really the heart of the French Quarter and the heart of the city," says Schramm. "So it's very, very minimal and tasteful. We just do beautiful red velvet bows and white lights. We're going for something really simple and really elegant, and that's what we do every single year."

"We do white lights on all the Azalea bushes and all the greenery flanking the Andrew Jackson statue. It really makes the square at night look really gorgeous when it's lit," says Schramm.

This year's celebration features a record number of free holiday concerts.

"We're producing 17 concerts that are free and open to the public throughout the month of December, at both St. Louis Cathedral and St. Augustine Church in Treme.

There'll also be a record number of cooking demonstrations this year.
