Analyst: Letten won't survive ''Blog Gate''

Before the ''Blog Gate' scandal erupted in the U.S. Attorneys' office in New Orleans, it appeared Republican-appointed Jim Letten was a shoe-in to keep his job during President Obama's second term.

Now, some political observers say that appears unlikely.

LApolitics.com publisher John Maginnis tells WWL First News that it seems certain to him that Letten will not keep his job for long.

"A federal judge's stinging criticism and the ongoing investigation of the office run by U.S. Attorney Jim Letten seems to many to remove any doubt that the president will replace him soon in the Eastern District," Macginnis said.

He says Letten has lost support with both of Louisiana's senators, Republican David Vitter and Democrat Mary Landrieu.

"With Vitter and other Republicans backing off supporting Letten, Landrieu is now expected to recommend a Democrat to be the next U.S. attorney," Maginnis says.

Maginnis says there is a short list of candidates that may be tapped to replace Letten.

"Several political sources say the short list includes Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, Clerk of Civil District Court Dale Atkins, Judge Keva Landrum-Johnson and attorneys Kim Boyle and Ken Polite," Maginnis says.
