Police say a child died today after jumping out of a psychiatric hospital van that pulled over on the I-10 in Metairie.
"A Southeast Louisiana Hospital van was transporting a 13-year-old to Southeast Louisiana Hospital for medical purposes," Trooper Melissa Matey said. "There was some sort of altercation in the vehicle where the driver had to pull over."
She says that's when the child took off.
"The 13-year-old was able to exit that vehicle and ran across the five lanes of I-10," Matey explained. She says, however, the child then tried to run from the median to across the on-coming lanes of traffic. "He was struck... by a tow truck. The juvenile was transported to the LSU Trauma Center where he later passed away."
The investigation continues.
