Head on down to the Pet Fest and find out your dog's DNA

Have you ever wondered just which breeds make up your mixed-breed dog?

A lot of owners are these days, and with just a swab of a cheek you can find out this weekend and help out a local animal shelter.

The Who's Your Daddy event is part of Pet Fest 2012 on Sunday at Lafreniere Park to benefit the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter.

"So if you have the perfect mutt or the perfect mixed breed and you just want to know what their heritage is, you can come to the Pet Fest and do a quick cheek swab and the results of your dog's breeds will be mailed to you," says Holly Valenti, owner of Central Bark Doggie Daycare. She hosting the event and says tests are just $50 on Sunday. "The going rate for DNA tests for dogs is about $75-80 retail."

More dog owners are getting their pet's DNA tested for a variety of reasons.

Some people just want to know what kind of dog their mutt rescue actually is, some need it for more detailed medical information and, "People are moving toward getting DNA tests for homeowner's insurance policies. A lot of homeowners insurers will not accept people who have a lot of breeds of dogs," Valenti says, for example bully breeds, sometimes even German Shepherds.

Pet Fest will be 11am-4pm Sunday, with Emcee WWL-TV's news anchor Angela Hill. "It's on the main lawn, right across the street from the doggie park. We want everybody to come out," and Valenti points out, "You still have time to see the Saints game since it doesn't start until 3:30!"
