Louisiana outlaws another synthetic drug

A synthetic drug known as N-bomb or 25-I has been declared a schedule one narcotic by the State of Louisiana.

Emergency legislation was ordered after a death at the recent Voodoo Music Festival in New Orleans and a rash of emergency room visits also blamed on the drug. It's also called Smiley on the streets.

State Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce Greenstein made the declaration at a news conference Friday.

"We do not tolerate the manufacturing, sale or use of synthetic dangerous drugs like 25-I, that put our loved ones and those around us in danger," said Greenstein.

Virginia was first state to take action after overdoses and other bizarre affects on users. The DEA has compared 25-I to LSD. The agency said just a drop on the tongue or in the nose, is enough to kill.

''People who don't die from 25-I can experience permanent brain damage, psychosis and extreme behavior changes,'' added Greenstein.

By ranking the drug as a schedule one narcotic, it's ranked with heroin...making the use, possession and manufacture punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
