NOPD gets citizen advisory boards

The City of New Orleans today announced 56 residents will serve on Police Community Advisory Boards (PCAB's) that will be assigned to each of the eight NOPD districts.

According to Mayor Mitch Landrieu's office, "the seven-member advisory boards will be trained by the U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service on conducting community meetings, submitting recommendations and complaints to the NOPD and implementing action plans."

Officials say the PCAB's are a recommendation of the Department of Justice, aimed at better fostering "communication between residents and the NOPD and to provide feedback and recommendations on safety and quality-of-life issues."

“As part of the consent decree to oversee transformation of our police department, we’ve worked closely with the Department of Justice to ensure open lines of communication between residents and NOPD,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “We’re committed to creating a world-class police department, and these advisory boards will help us ensure that the public is involved every step of the way.”

PCAB members will serve a 1-year term and meet at least once a quarter, according to the city.

According to the city, the advisory boards will work to:

•        Maintain a consistent partnership between the community and law enforcement;
•        Serve to help reduce crime and enhance the quality of life for all citizens;
•        Help community groups share responsibility for police accountability and the commitment to serve;
•        Create processes to help address issues of bias-based policing;
•        Improve interaction between police and citizens through education and training;
•        Assist law enforcement in helping to maintain police standards for accountability; and
