Study: Can men or women tolerate more pain?
Shana Rose Reporting
A new British university study looks at the pain tolerance of men and women, and the results may surprise you.
This study shows men actually tolerated a couple different types of pain better than women. But gender expert Judy Hoberman says it might be a little soon to write-off the ongoing debate. "I went back and looked at all the studies over the last ten years and it flip flops. One year it's women and one year it's men."
Hoberman says men and women are different in almost everything they do, which is partly cultural. "Because men are supposed to be macho men. And little boys are taught to hide their emotions, because it's not masculine to show your in pain."
Even though the male sex has the tough guy image, it's been widely held that women, who have to endure childbirth, are the real champions of pain tolerance. But even though this study shows men can tolerate more pain, gender expert Judy Hoberman isn't totally buying the results. "If men had to go childbirth, we'd probably have single-child families!"
Researchers say, "That of the volunteers, men considered themselves less sensitive, more tolerant to pain and less willing to report pain than a typical woman. Likewise, women rated themselves as more sensitive and less tolerant to pain and more willing to report pain than a typical man."
