Landrieu proposes more cuts to most New Orleans city departments

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said today, "We still need to make some tough choices."

He has unveiled his 2013 budget proposal.

"With the exception of public safety entities; The New Orleans Police Department,The New Orleans Fire Department, and EMS; many departments will see an 8 to 10 percent reduction from their 2012 budgets."

Landrieu said his office is cutting 25 percent of its spending.

The City Council is setting a calendar to hold budget hearings.

A proposed fee on the bills of electricity customers is also among the proposals in Landrieu's latest proposed city budget.

Landrieu said the proposed fee on power bills will amount to about $2 to $3 per month for most households. It would be used to fund street light repairs after emergency grant funds run out.

Landrieu outlined budget plans at a news conference before the $491 million document is presented to the City Council.

Revenue available for the budget is down while new expenses include an estimated $11 million bill to fund improvements to the police department under an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department.
