More than 4,500 board-certified plastic surgeons and other health care professionals will honor five breast reconstruction patients from across the country during ASPS' annual "Patients of Courage: Triumph over Adversity" awards. In recognition of the nation's first Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA, this year's awards will recognize breast cancer survivors who have undergone breast reconstruction and have used their experience to help other women facing breast cancer, mastectomy, and subsequent reconstruction.
A new type of breast implants is one of the hot topics at this year's conference. The "Gummy Bear" implants were cleared by the FDA earlier this year, although they've been available in Europe and South America for a few years.
Renown plastic surgeon and one of the notables behind the "Gummy Bears" is going to be here today. Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, who authored the "Five-Year Follow-Up data from the U.S. Clinical Trial for Sientra's U.S. Food and Drug Administration-Approved Silimed Brand Round and Shaped Implants with High-Strength Silicone Gel" is leading the discussion at the conference.
Dr. Alizadeh says the new implants look and feel much more real.
He tells me even if there's a rupture these new implants will maintain their shape. "That's a huge advantage, because the older implants were made out of silicone. The problem with those if there was a rupture in the implant, the silicone could potentially leak."
And these newer implants are much more natural says Dr. Alizadeh. "The other advantage that is happening now in the marketplace is that you have a lot more variabilities so you can custom make the implants according to the needs of the patient in terms of their height and the width of their chest."
As national spokesperson for BRA Day, Jewel will give a special performance of her song 'Flower,' written in honor of breast reconstruction patients.

Keynote speakers and renowned campaign strategists Mary Matalin and New Orleans native James Carville will provide behind-the-scenes insight into Washington power politics and share their opposing political opinions and analyses on current events also during the conference organizers say.
