Miles: "The need to get sevens is important"

LSU Coach Les Miles can be difficult to understand at times. But he made it clear during his Monday weekly press conference that executing in the red zone is very important.

The Fighting Tigers have failed to score a touchdown seven times this season when visiting the red zone. That's one behind Arkansas for the league lead. LSU has been in the red zone 32 times this year and they've only scored 15 touchdowns. Against South Carolina, LSU could muster only one touchdown on five trips inside the 20-yard line.

Miles said on Monday that scoring seven, instead of three is a key to winning in the Southeastern Conference.

That's one reason why Texas A&M is having so much success in its first season in the SEC. They lead the conference with 37 touchdowns. Redshirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel is responsible for 24 of those TDs.

Manziel has been taking the SEC by storm with his ability to make plays through the air and on the ground. He leads the league, averaging 113 yards a game rushing and in six games, he's averaged 280 passing yards a contest.

In the Aggies 59-57 win over Louisiana Tech in Shreveport on Saturday, Manziel set a conference single-game record with 576 total offensive yards.

"Johnny Football" as they call him is not as big as Tim Tebow or Cam Newton. But he's putting up Heisman like numbers. Some are dismissing Manziel for the Heisman, because a freshman has never won the award. But the Kerrville, Texas, native could become one of the favorites, if he scores a bunch of "sevens" against LSU's defense.
