New Orleans introduces new technology to track blighted properties

Now you can track just how well New Orleans is fighting blighted properties.

The City unveiled a new website Thursday allowing users to enter an address, a street or look at a map to search for blighted properties and see what's being done to remedy the problem.

City officials said it's been a top priority for Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration.

It's goal is to make city government more open, more efficient and better engaged with the citizenry.

The Landrieu administration has committed to removing 10,000 blighted or vacant properties in four years.

Mayor Landrieu says 8,000 have been torn down so far, but there is still a long way to go.

The tool also allows users to track properties and create a watch list. A user can also request emails notifying them when a property being watched moves forward in the blight process.

Anyone with an Internet connection can visit http://blightstatus to:

·    search for any property to view its case history in a clear and simple format;
·    create a “watchlist” to track the progress of multiple properties;
·    receive email alerts whenever a property on your "watchlist" moves forward in the blight process;
·    analyze blight citywide or down to the block level using interactive maps and charts; and
·    learn more about the blight process itself at the Help Center.
