Deer hunters in southeast Louisiana face a curtailed hunting season this year, due to the impact of Hurricane Isaac.
State Wildlfife and Fisheries biologist Kenny Ribbeck says flooding from Isaac took a big toll on deer in Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes, and across the Lake Maurepas Basin.
Hunting season in those areas will be shortened and restricted to bucks only this year.
Agents did aerial and ground inspections for deer killed by the storm, and made a recommendation to the Wildlife & Fisheries Commission to reduce the 'bucks only' portion of the season in those areas.
"We had a lot of fairly new fawns, that, with the size of those animals and their strength...just didn't have the ability to withstand the storm surge that we saw."
Ribbeck says deer mortality was significant from the hurricane, with nearly 90 percent of fawns in the Maurepas Basin killed.
He says the hunting restrictions were the only logical action to take.
"We feel like the season we recommended and that the Commission approved will be addressing the deer herd and allow that deer herd to rebuild itself over the next several years."
