St. Tammany ahead of last year's pace in new home permits

St. Tammany Parish Wednesday is reporting growth in home construction that's outpacing last year, and has already beaten 2009 and 2010.  Parish leaders are optimistic about sustaining that growth into the future.

St. Tammany was the fastest-growing parish in Louisiana about a decade ago, but things cooled off after Hurricane Katrina.  But a recent trend in growth is encouraging news, says Suzanne Parson Stymiest with St. Tammany Parish.

"We've turned a corner and from 2011 to 2012 we're on pace right now to have almost a 27 percent increase," she told WWL First News.  "Within a year or two, we're going to be back having really sound, sustainable growth."

Parish officials say not only are home permits up, they expect several businesses to open their doors in the next year and half to compliment the growth.
