SPLC: The feds to join lawsuit against Gusman

The Southern Poverty Law Center says the U.S. Department of Justice is trying to join their lawsuit that alleges that Sheriff Marlin Gusman allows brutal and inhumane conditions to flourish at the Orleans Parish Prison.

The lawsuit claims gross neglect, sadistic rapes, and brutal beatings are the norm at the prison and that the facility if understaffed and deputies are poorly trained.

The Southern Poverty Law Center says they filed a federal class action civil rights lawsuit against  Gusman in April, "Charging that the sheriff's indifference has allowed brutal and inhumane conditions to flourish at the Orleans Parish Prison. The lawsuit describes a facility where violence and widespread contraband, including knives and drugs, are the norm. It also notes the facility is understaffed, that deputies are poorly trained and supervised, and that staffers are often complicit in the abuses suffered by the prisoners."
