NOLA council pleads to save the tolls but lawmaker calls it ill informed

When voters go to the polls this fall, one of the hot local issues will be the measure to end tolls on the Crescent City Connection.  Today, New Orleans City Council members joined together in expressing their full support for keeping the tolls.

City councilwoman Jackie Clarkson said she fears when the tolls are gone, the city will end up paying dearly to maintain the span.

''This city will inherit the cost of that bridge, which we cannot afford,'' she claimed.

City council member Cynthia Hedge Morrell expressed the same fear that the CCC would fall into disrepair without the tolls.

''You don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water and once we do this it would be too cost prohibitive to reinstate it,'' said Morrell.

State Representative Pat Connick, a strong opponent of the bridge tolls responded.

''We need to kick the baby out with the bath water,'' Connick said.

Connick said the toll money has been wasted for years while the state has been and will continue to pay the bills for the bridge.

''When the tolls end we'll have 10 to 18 million dollars leftover that can maintain the lights and keep the bridge swept and patrolled,''

In the election, voters in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes will decide the toll issue once and for all.
