It's been a busy summer for Jefferson Parish. From Elmwood to the Veterans corridor and even at Boomtown Casino, economic development activity has been ramping up say officials with the Jefferson Economic Development Corporation (JEDCO).
New businesses are now popping up everywhere it seems, and most are national restaurants and retailers.
But why Jefferson?
Jerry Bologna, JEDCO's deputy director says apparently they have the demographics these businesses want, "At a time when much of the nation is still experiencing economic hardship these national retailers have shown confidence. And this is despite record highs in real estate prices in areas like Veterans."
There's not just one particular demographic these companies are looking for, "When these national brands look to expand into a market they're looking for the demographic that fits their price point. And I think the retailers, both shopping and food establishments, see our demographic in Jefferson Parish fits."
JEDCO says a long list of businesses, from medical supply and chemical companies to businesses who serve healthy lunches to students have opened in the metro over the summer, bringing new jobs and new opportunities with them.
And not all the economic expansion is on the Eastbank of Jefferson Parish.
A $20 million expansion to Boomtown Casino New Orleans is coming JEDCO says. "Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc. invested in plans to build a five-story hotel that will connect to the existing West Bank facility, which includes a casino, entertainment venue, and restaurants. The new hotel is expected to house 150 rooms, a fitness center, and meeting space right on the Harvey Canal.
"This project is an economic win for Jefferson Parish. The hotel addition will create approximately 50 new permanent jobs, once completed, and more than 150 construction jobs. Construction is slated to begin within 60 days. It's expected to take about 13 months to complete. The Lemoine Company, a Louisiana-based company, will be the general contractor on the project."
Pinnacle Entertainment's presence in Jefferson Parish JEDCO says has played a large role in the economic growth of the region. Currently, they project that Boomtown Casino employs 700 people from all over the area. In 2011, it drew 1.5 million visitors and it is on pace to do the same in 2012.
Jefferson Parish officials say they believe the hotel project will even further promote tourism on the West Bank.
