Isaac will temporarily ease mosquito breeding threat
David Blake Reporting
Even with all the water being pushed around by Hurricane Isaac, it appears the storm will give us a slight break from this record onslaught of West Nile virus, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce Greenstein explained.
''Having high winds and strong rains is actually a good disruption for the life-cycle of Mosquitoes, so we're actually going to see a temporary reprieve from what we've been seeing,'' Greenstein explained.
DHH reports 53 new cases of West Nile this week in Louisiana, bringing the states total for the year to a record 145. Greenstein is not optimistic about the rest of the season.
''We know there's a lot of standing water now, so we know the Mosquito population will repopulate," he said.
With more people outside escaping the stifling heat in their homes and even cooking out on barbecues, Greenstein urges everyone to take the threat seriously by wearing long sleeves and pants and loading up on repellent and that includes for people at football games.
