1,037 inmates in tents moved to prisons

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlon Gusman says 1,037 jail inmates were moved overnight from tent barracks in New Orleans to state prisons because of Tropical Storm Isaac. He says those moves began Sunday and were completed by 6 a.m. Monday.

Gusman also has released about 80 people who were serving municipal sentences or waiting for city court dates. The sheriff says the parish jail still holds 1,329 inmates.

Gusman says that until Tropical Storm Isaac has passed, the jail will take municipal inmates only if they're accused of domestic violence or a weapons violation. He adds that if the city government were to order evacuation, curfew violators also would be jailed.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says he doesn't expect to order evacuation.
