Plaquemines Parish crews hustled to the levees that protect the low-lying areas of the parish Sunday morning, as Parish President Billy Nungesser declared a state of emergency.
Crews were out early in the morning, reinforcing protection on the east bank to keep the leveess from being over-topped.
Nungesser said levees were also being shored up on the wetsbank of the parish where damaged areas have been under repair for several months.
He says the parish is working with the state to close some gaps along Highway 23, as well. But roadways are open at this time.
