The following is a news release from the parish:
The St .Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center is fully activated and taking actions in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac, which is currently forecast to make landfall as a strong category 2 hurricane near Biloxi, Miss.on Tuesday.
The parish expects to see 105 mph winds with higher gusts and storm surges between 6 to 8 feet beginning Monday night and into Tuesday. The parish is currently under a hurricane watch.
Parish President V.J. St. Pierre Jr. at 10:15 a.m. declared a state of emergency due to Isaac.
Because of the threat of dangerous storm surge and widespread flooding, calls for evacuations are possible as early as this evening. Residents who wish to leave are encouraged to do so as soon as possible before an official evacuation order might be issued. Information on assisted evacuation will be forthcoming.
Through the duration of the storm the parish expects to experience widespread power outages as well as a loss of emergency and parish services.
Residents should begin preparing their homes for hurricane conditions, including boarding up windows, picking up items outside that could be blown by winds, clearing culverts and drains, etc. All sandbag locations are currently being stocked around the parish; please bring a shovel to fill bags. In addition, public schools in St. Charles Parish have been cancelled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
