New Orleans in Isaac cone - at least for now

There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of Tropical Storm Isaac.  For now, however, New Orleans is in the cone of possible landfall locations.  The official forecast track calls for Isaac to be a hurricane in the Gulf early next week.

The man in charge at the Hurricane Center says until Isaac gets better organized, they are not going to be sure where Isaac is going.

"It's still a low-end tropical storm without, really, an inner core," Rick Knabb explained.  "It's going to take some time it seems for it to develop a core."

Based on that, Knabb admits they are not sure where Isaac will go.

"The models can change over the next few days. So, we just can't pinpoint where the track ultimately is going to be."

New Orleans Homeland Security Director Jerry Sneed says with the Crescent City in the possible path of an approaching hurricane next week, now is the time to make sure you are ready - just in case - it comes this way.

"We're watching things... making sure our plan is ready," Sneed told WWL First News.  "Our citizens ought to be doing the same thing."

He says it just make sense to make sure you have needed supplies and know where you would go if you had to leave.

Isaac is currently bearing down on Haiti and then Cuba.  The Hurricane Center says it is forecast to head in the Gulf Monday morning and start to get stronger.

Channel 4 meteorologist Laura Buchtel says expect the forecast path to change several times in the coming days.

"The models are not in good agreement," she insisted.  "They are going to keep flopping back and forth."

Buchtel says the eventual track could be anywhere from the Florida Peninsula all the way over to the central Louisiana coast.

"Don't focus too much on what the models are doing right now, they are going to go back and forth."

She says it will be late Sunday into Monday before we will have a good idea where Isaac will eventually go.
