Survey: Workers most worried about losing benefits

Every year Gallup is now asking workers about what they're most worried about.

Since 2009 there's been a spike in the fear of having one's job moved overseas, but still, worries over the loss or reduction of benefits tops the list.

Other fears nationally include reduction of wages and layoffs.

Click here for the survey from Gallup.

Forty percent nationally are worried that in the next year their benefits could be cut or reduced.

We asked workers in the CBD about which they fear the most; the loss of benefits, a salary cut, hours reduced or an actual job loss.  A man told us "All of the above!  If anything else gets cut too bad, you have to find a new job anyway, huh?"  Many others said that a job loss is the worst case scenario, because a paycheck is the last thing they want to go without.

College graduates worry less about actually losing their job according to Gallup.

Locally parents were more likely to worry about the loss of healthcare for their kids, and the ability to take paid time off to care for them.  Others agree with the fear of a loss of benefits, as they say healthcare and insurance have gotten so expensive, and no doctor may see them if they don't carry insurance.

Even with the increases in job loss fears after 2009, Gallup says they have "Never found a majority of workers worried about any of the possible job-related losses in its 15-year history of asking the question.

"Though worry about each of the possible job events is two to five percentage points lower than in the 2011 survey, the changes are not large enough from a statistical perspective to definitively conclude that fewer workers are worried now than last year."
