One of two St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's deputies gunned down in the line of duty last week will be laid to rest today.  Deputy Jeremy Triche (left) leaves behind a wife and a 2-year-old son.

St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre says they have a lot of healing to do as they begin this week saying good-bye to two fallen officers.

"We take it one day at a time, but I'm sure with all the support and prayers that I have heard and received, phone calls I've received, we're going to get through this," Tregre said.

The funeral at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church on W. 5th St. is followed by burial at St. John Memorial Garden on Airline.  It is expected to cause traffic delays in the area.

Tomorrow, visitation begins for Deputy Brandon Nielsen at Lakelawn Metairie, with services Wednesday.

Triche and Nielsen were shot to death last Thursday as they investigated the shooting earlier that morning of Deputy Michael Boyington.  Sheriff Tregre says as Triche, Nielsen and Deputy Jason Triche questioned a suspect at a nearby trailer park, another person stepped out from behind the trailer, armed with an assault weapon, and opened fire.  Jason Triche was wounded in the attack.  Both deputies Boyington and Jason Triche are expected to recover from their injuries.

Seven suspects are in custody, all of them facing charges related to the attempted murders of the two surviving deputies.  Louisiana State Police are leading the investigation as authorities build a murder case in the deaths of deputies Nielsen and Jeremy Triche.

Funds to help the families of the slain and injured deputies have been set up at a couple of local institutions, Louisiana Federal Credit Union and Community Bank on Belle Terre in LaPlace.
