They were racing big birds at the Fairgrounds over the weekend.
"Don't Call Me Emu with jockey Jeff Jerman aboard won the first-ever ostrich race at Fair Grounds on Saturday night," Fairgrounds spokesman James Mulvihill said in a news release. " The track was filled to capacity with what may have been the largest crowd to fill the building since the track reopened after Hurricane Katrina."
He says the ostrich race and the other special events threatened to push them over capacity.
"Officials had to stop admitting fans midway through the event, which also included a camel race and a local mascot race," according to Mulvihill.
