Intolerable boss? Experts say it's bad for your health

There have been a lot of studies about bosses the past few years showing that a bad boss or a bullying boss can have adverse health affects on employees.  Some show that a screaming or intolerable boss can affect other areas of your life, even family life.

The American Psychological Association says 75% of working adults say the worst aspect of their job is their immediate higher-up.

"There are truly horrible bosses.  But I think a lot of the situations aren't horrible bullying, but somewhere in between in which both parties play a part in doing that.  And the whole culture of the organization may play a part," says Dr. Martin Drell, Professor of Psychiatry with LSU Health Sciences Center.

He adds some of the problem can be attributed to the corporate structure, with one person in charge of another, while they're now finding a team atmosphere is more conducive to productive and fulfilled employees.  The team environment he says is "Probably better for stress and burn-out...a situation in which people work in teams, and people feel valued and their input valued.  But that's not how it is at some companies."

According to data published in the Journal of Applied Psychology about screaming bosses, employees are actually impaired by it, with people's memory and ability to understand instructions plummeting.

Dr. Drell says employees can feel helpless, almost victimized. "When you make your boss into the complete power then he or she is in charge and you don't feel in charge of your own life, which is not a good feeling to have."  He says always do a gut check, and see what part your boss is playing, and what part you are playing.
