Slower security - Faster cell phone service in the Dome

It may a little longer to get into the Mercedes Benz Superdome for tonight's game, but the cell service is faster once you do get in the stadium.

"The first thing that they are going to encounter is enhanced security measures as far as getting into the building," Dome General Manager Alan Freeman told WWL First News.

He says the league now requires that security workers "wand" everyone entering an NFL game with a metal detector.

"That will be standard procedure this year, so the fans need to makes some allowances for getting here a little be earlier."

Freeman urges fans to help speed up the process "by not wearing a lot of jewelry and having all of their metal items pulled out of their pockets."

Inside the stadium fans should notice greatly improved cell phone speed and service.  It used to be that many fans couldn't make calls during a game and struggled to use text and data services.

"We worked with... the cell phone companies to install what's known as a distributive antenna system," Freeman explained. "This is going to be something that fans are really going to appreciate."

He says they now have the "most robust system installed in any stadium in this country."

They tested it during the Final Four earlier this year and found "absolutely zero dropped phone calls and no customer complaints whatsoever."

AT&T and Verizon are currently on the new system.  Freeman says the others will be coming soon.

The above picture shows work underway earlier this week to get the Mercedes-Benz Superdome ready for tonight's preseason game with the Jaguars.
