New Orleans cops shooting more suspects

There have been nearly twice as many officer involved shootings this year as there were last year in New Orleans.  It has investigators looking for answers.

"Last year there were 16 officer involved shootings that we rolled out to," Independent Police Monitor Susan Hutson told WWL First News.  "There year, in the first half alone, there have been 15."

She's working to determine if suspects are forcing cops to shoot more, or if officers are making bad decisions.

"We really, though, need to look at tactics... how you approach a situation before you actually have to use lethal force," she explained.  "Officers do things that are risky here.  It puts them at risk, and when they are at risk, lethal force is being used.  That's a training issue."

Hutson says she hopes to have a report on the issue by the end of the month.

"We're looking for issues like, 'Were the officers tactics correct?' "

She also asks, "Did the officers do things that got them into a shooting."
