Tear gas ends 6-hour NOPD standoff

New Orleans Police used tear gas late Saturday night to end a six-hour standoff with a man barricaded inside a Desire neighborhood home.

The incident began about 5:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of Morrice Duncan Drive.

According to the police, 26-year-old Robert Maize told arriving officers he had weapons and refused to leave his home after he threatened to kill his neighbor.

After multiple attempts by negotiators to get Maize to exit his home, tear gas was deployed into the residence.

Maize surrendered shortly after 11:30 p.m.

Neighbors were kept out of their homes and the area sealed off during the standoff. No injuries were reported.

Maize is charged with making threats against his neighbor.
