Great American Seafood Cook Off in New Orleans this weekend

The culinary arts seem to just be getting more and more popular. But New Orleanians don't have to settle for the cooking channel this weekend, as the Great American Seafood Cook-Off is right at the Convention Center on Saturday.
It's a national contest for chefs that's helping solidify Louisiana's place on the map as "thee" place for good food. Check it out Saturday and not only will you enjoy the music of Kermit Ruffins but see some truly talented chefs, the best in their state, preparing dishes that have already won awards.
"It's the most prestigious cook off in the United States," Ewell Smith, Executive Director with the Louisiana Seafood and Marketing Board says, and along with watching some of the greats, there will be a lot of samples for those who attend and some great local music. The chefs will create dishes using seafood from their home states and will also emphasize the importance of cooking with products from sustainable fisheries.
Last year's winner hails from Alabama.
Each year, Governor Jindal sends a letter to his fellow governors inviting their states' best chefs to compete in the Great American Seafood Cook-Off.
Now in its ninth year, the cook off is drawing chefs from such states as Maine, North and South Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon and Hawaii. Even non-coastal states like Pennsylvania and Kansas will be represented.
The underlying message at the cook off organizers say is sustainable fisheries and how it's important that American chefs and consumers purchase domestic seafood that comes from well-managed fisheries. Beyond that, it's a cooking competition and many of the chefs are very fun and quite accomplished. Sig Hansen from Deadliest Catch is the MC along with Cory Bahr, recent winner of Chopped.
