Report: Vilma, NFL in settlement talks

Attorneys for Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma today told a federal judge that they have been in negotiations with the NFL to try to reduce Vilma's season-long ban, according to a WWL-TV report.

After ESPN quoted "league sources" in reporting that the NFL had offered to cut Vilma's suspension in half if the linebacker dropped his lawsuit, the NFL responded that the report was inaccurate and that no settlement offer had been made.

Vilma's lawyers are asking Federal Judge Ginger Berrigan to look into whether information about the case had been leaked to the media.

Attorneys for Vilma blasted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for comments made at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony this weekend.

Goodell told ESPN, “When players are rewarded for injuring other players, that's not good for the game and we're gonna get that out of the game. That's a bounty.”

The Commissioner also said, “We have three years of denial of this. We have the evidence. It's very clear and so we've taken the appropriate steps.”
