Livingston grand jury indicts mayor and police chief

A pair of officials are in trouble with the law on the Northshore. Today a grand jury indicted the mayor and police chief of Springfield on corruption charges. They allegedly abused their authority to try and help a DWI suspect in Livingston Parish.
A news release from Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says, "In the four-count indictment returned by a Livingston Parish grand jury, Mayor Charles Martin, 62, and Police Chief James Jones, 48, are each accused of obstruction of justice, criminal conspiracy to obstruct justice, injuring public records, and criminal conspiracy to injure public records."
Prosecutors say the charges stem from a conspiracy by Martin and Jones to hide evidence and obstruct the prosecution of the suspect in an April 10, 2011 DWI arrest.
Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell said, "The two officials intentionally misused their authority and positions of public trust, and they knowingly tried to obstruct the prosecution of a DWI case."
