Celebrate the 4th of July down by the riverside at the 22nd annual Go 4th on the River Dueling Barges Fireworks Extravaganza.
Selected as a Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society, the 2012 celebration on the historic New Orleans riverfront, this event will feature family activities with performances by the Navy Band New Orleans at the Steamboat Natchez Dock, the Brass Quintet at Riverwalk Marketplace, and the Ceremonial Band at Washington Artillery Park, across from Jackson Square.
Organizers say, "The National World War II Museum's own Victory Belles and Amanda Shaw and the Cute Guys will also thrill audiences at Washington Artillery Park. See the strolling Riverwalk Jazz Band from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Riverwalk Marketplace."
Activities culminate at 9:00 p.m. with the nationally acclaimed dueling barges fireworks display, which can be viewed from both sides of the Mighty Mississippi River.
Ranked by the American Pyrotechnics Association as one of the "Top Five Must-see Fireworks Displays in the U.S.," this year's fireworks show will feature nautical water shells that appear to be red, white, and blue 'stars' that cascade from the barges and illuminate the water.
Make sure to bring your radio, as the fireworks are synchronized on WWL 870 AM, WWL 105.3 FM and Magic 101.9 FM.
At Zephyrs Field this evening the first 6,000 fans will be presented with American flags, they'll have postgame fireworks and a postgame concert, featuring Local Option II.
The Third District Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 61st Annual Fire Truck Ride and Snow Ball Giveaway today from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. says Jody Sanderson, Public Information Officer. There will be two events, one at Station 31, 10423 Jefferson Highway in River Ridge and at Station 34, 1115 Mississippi in Metairie. Sanderson says, "The Third District does this as a way of showing its appreciation to the residents of our area for their continued support for the last 61 years."
NORTH SHORE INDEPENDENCE DAY EVENTS
The 34th Annual Greater Mandeville Seafood Festival is a five day event, from today through Sunday, put on by the Greater Mandeville Seafood Association. Organizers say, "The Seafood Festival is held at beautiful Fontainebleau State Park and is a fun packed event with 20 food booths serving Louisiana seafood and other dishes, arts and crafts from 11 states, music from 2 stages, a white sand beach, water park for patrons, a vintage car show, carnival rides, and fireworks over the lake on July 4th."
Admission is $15.00 at the gate, $10.00 on line, kids under 10 and seniors 65 and older along with active duty military enter free.
In Madisonville it's another North Shore 4th of July Celebration from 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with free admission. Organizers say:
"Celebrating the 4th of July just like we did in the older days here in Madisonville! A parade with prizes! Decorate your bikes, wagons, strollers etc. and join the parade! Lineup at the Maritime Museum starting at 1. Parade starts at 2:00! We will parade from the Museum down Main Street, left on Jahncke, right on Pine, cross 22 then right on St. Tammany to Water St. and follow along the river till you get to Town Hall. There will be games with prizes such as a Horseshoe tournament; $5 to enter and winner takes all! There will be an Apple Pie Baking contest, a beauty pageant, Veterans celebration and much, much more! Fireworks at dusk! Bring your families and friends along with a picnic basket and a cooler and join us on the Riverfront in Madisonville for fun and memory making!"
And the Slidell Heritage Festival is from 3:00p.m. to 11:00p.m. today, put on by the Rotary Clubs of Slidell and Slidell Northshore
Admission is $10 with children under 12 are free with an adult. Organizers say, "There will be delicious food, entertainment and kids' activities. Don't miss the fireworks at 9:00 p.m."
