Fire chief has advice for those planning fireworks displays
Chris Miller Reporting
Some folks may be contemplating their own fireworks displays for the 4th of July. If those folks are in the city of New Orleans, the fire chief has a few words.
"It's illegal to purchase, sell or explode fireworks in Orleans Parish," Parent said at New Orleans fire department headquarters Tuesday. "On a yearly basis, we have 8,600 injuries due to fireworks-related injuries."
And Parent said a significant number of them are children.
"Kids from 5 to 14 years old are twice as likely to be injured by fireworks than anyone else," he said.
For anyone outside New Orleans who may be listening, the chief did have some recommendations: "If a firework doesn't go off when you light, assume it will explode. Keep fireworks away form kids."
