New Orleans is the fastest growing big city in the United States.
The U.S. Census Bureau released the rankings today. It found that the Crescent City grew nearly five percent between Census Day (April 1, 2010) and July 1, 2011.
Federal Demographer David Dixon tells WWL First News that new Orleans population grew to 360,740 as of July 1, 2011.
"New Orleans has increased about 4.9 percent between 2010 and 2011, going from a population of about 344,000 to about 361,000," Dixon explained.
He says it is fueled mostly by "domestic migration" not births versus deaths.
The rankings are of cities with populations of 100,000 or more in 2010.
A Census news release says, "This puts the city's population at 79.2 percent of the pre-Katrina July 1, 2005, estimate of 455,188."
While New Orleans ranks number one for percentage growth, it also ranks number eleven in numerical population growth.
