System in the Gulf could become Tropical Storm Debby

We are keeping an eye on a low pressure system in the Southern Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center says it could be a depression or tropical storm over the weekend.

It's not clear where the system will go next week.

"No one has any idea," WWL TV Meteorologist Laura Buchtel said.  "Anybody who tells you they know where it's going is lying through their teeth."

That's because the so-called spaghetti plots (above) show a vast array of options.

"Models are saying everything from Brownsville, Texas to Miami Florida... and everywhere in between."

Listen to Buchtel:

If there is any encouraging news... there are no models calling for a New Orleans area landfall.

"None of the model show it actually crossing our coast line... before moving west or east," Buchtel explained.

She also describes the system as a slow mover.

"We are talking about this into next week."

Louisiana State Climatologist Barry Keim says everyone should keep an eye on this system over the weekend.

"It still bears watching for all in the Gulf, because anything could happen."
