It appears the Jefferson Parish school layoffs reported Wednesday are wider in scope than originally thought. The system now says 200 central office employees and 300 teachers have been notified that their jobs have been eliminated. Because the jobs have been eliminated and the affected employees have not been laid off, they can apply for other positions within the system. Another 1,000 employees were notified that their job descriptions would change. The 300 affected are from the seven schools recently closed in the system's attempts to consolidate and deal with an anticipated $30 million budget deficit. The school closures are expected to save the system $5.8 million, and the central office cutbacks eliminate another $5.6 million in expenses.
