LSU pitching dominates the opening weekend

For the LSU Tigers to get back to Omaha, having success on the mound will be the key. Well, Coach Paul Mainieri couldn't ask for better results for the first three games of the season. LSU gave up just two runs during the weekend, which ended with a 4-0 victory over Air Force.

After good starting pitching performances by Kevin Gausman and Ryan Eades, Kurt McCune tossed six shutout innings on Sunday to get his first win of the year. McCune allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out four.

For the third day in a row, the bullpen did its job. Freshman Aaron Nola retired all six batters he faced in the 7th and 8th innings. Nick Rumbelow didn't allow a run in the 9th inning to cap off the Tigers second straight shutout.

Offensively, the Tigers did most of their damage in 4th inning, scoring three runs off Air Force starting pitcher Michael Ceci. Tyler Moore had the big hit, a two-run single.

Moore got the start at catcher and he made a terrific play in the top of the 7th inning. An Air Force hitter attempted a bunt, but it was popped up behind the plate. Moore quickly got his mask off and made a diving catch, as he was heading towards the back stop.

LSU added a run in the 8th inning, when left fielder Jackson Slaid singled home a run. The sophomore from Sibley, Louisiana, had three hits on the afternoon.

LSU will play again on Wednesday, where they'll host McNeese State. First pitch is at 3:00, because the men's basketeball team is in action that night at the PMAC.
