Endymion, Isis to roll later this evening
Dave Cohen and Jay Vise Reporting
The Krewe of Endymion will roll later tonight, weather permitting, at 5:30. The route will include a shortened path down Canal.
Jefferson Parish officials say Isis in Metairie will roll one hour later at 7:30 out of consideration for the weather.
People have been lining up along the route all day in anticipation of the parade rolling this evening.
Winds associated with this line of storms have been recorded up to 100 miles per hour. Officials are urging people to take down their tents and ladders until the storm passes.
Also, due to the weather, NOMTOC and Iris will both roll Sunday morning before Okeanos on the Uptown parade route. Tucks will parade Monday afternoon before Proteus.
The following is the full press release from the City of New Orleans concerning Endymion:
Today, the City announced changes to Saturday’s parade schedule because of severe weather in New Orleans.
Weather permitting, the City is prepared for start time of 5:30 pm for Endymion. The parade will take an abbreviated route, with the parade running “with traffic” on Canal Street eliminating the crossover at Liberty and the Canal Street loop. It will instead take a right onto St. Charles Avenue directly from Canal Street. Endymion’s start and disband areas will remain the same. The City is encouraging all residents to stay home as late as possible due to the weather. The City recommends residents go out to the route no earlier than one hour before the start time.
The City is also urging residents to take particular precautions to take down tents and secure any loose debris which could pose risks with high winds and rain.
Mayor Landrieu said, “We are asking all residents to use common sense along the parade route. Please be careful and use caution with the severe weather expected this afternoon. Please do not go out to the route early. We are working to ensure that this is a safe and successful Mardi Gras. I would particularly like to thank the hardworking employees of the City of New Orleans for doing whatever it takes to make this event happen.”
