Lingerie leads ladies' Valentine's Day wish list

Lingerie, flowers and candy seem to be staples when it come to guys gifting their gals for Valentine's Day.

But what do the ladies really want?

RetailMeNot.com, an online deal and couponing website, conducted a national poll and found that lingerie topped most ladies' lists at 36 percent, followed by roses at 15 percent.

Candy was a distant third.

WWL First News took to the streets of the CBD to offer the girls a choice of the top three.

Some sample responses...

"I don't wear lingerie. My husband doesn't give me time to wear it."

"Flowers die...candy, you get fat."

"I guess it depends on how long you've been with the person or what kind of relationship it is."

"Married ten years, I don't need the lingerie anymore."

"Lingerie! You can use it over and over. After you eat the candy, what are you going to do? You can't fit in the lingerie anymore. Flowers die. Lingerie!"

"Flowers, because they're beautiful and they last a long time. Lingerie's not beautiful on me."

And, guys might like to know that not all the ladies were terribly materialistic

A peaceful night, kind words, and time to relax were the choice of some.

"A nice relaxed dinner, a movie and sleep. That's all I need."

And, some tips from RetailMeNot.com...

Tip 1 - Flowers are always a safe gift idea that will make your partner feel special, but they can also be very pricey. Avoid unnecessary fees by using online or printable coupons to get those flowers for less, or pick up the flowers from your local florist instead of using the 800-number delivery (most florists will charge an extra fee on Valentine's Day). You can also save money by ordering your flowers without a vase and reusing one of your own.

Tip 2 - If you must do a special dinner at a nice restaurant, try going on a day other than Valentine's Day, like February 13 or 15. Restaurants will be a lot less crowded and have regular menu items for regular prices. Many popular restaurants go with a limited menu on V-Day and usually charge a bit more to capitalize on the busy holiday. Save Valentine's dinner for a special night at home! Or go out and see a movie but save money on the meal.

Tip 3 - If you plan to buy jewelry, don't be shy about using a coupon. Many retailers offer special promotions for Valentine's Day, so shop around for the best deal both online and in-stores.

Additionally, while more than 50% of consumers intend to spend upwards of $100 on purchases for the holiday, nearly a fourth of all consumers don't intend to spend any money on their spouse this Valentine's Day.

Is gifting a voucher/Groupon deal okay?

80% of consumers said that they would be ‘happy' if their spouse used a coupon to help save money on their gift purchase this Valentine's Day.
