Funeral for good Samaritan killed stopping carjacking

The memorial service for Mike Ainsworth is today at St. Louis Cathedral.

Visitation runs until 11:00 am, with the service immediately following.

Ainsworth died when a carjacker shot him.  He was at the bus stop with his two sons when he saw the attack and ran to help the victim.  The gunmen then turned the weapon on Ainsworth.  His children saw it happen and sat with their dad until he died.

A reception at the NOPD 8th District Station, located at 334 Royal Street, will occur after today's service.

New Orleans Police are asking for people who want to help the family to make donations.

Here is the info from the NOPD:

Donations may now be made at any Whitney Bank. If anyone would prefer to make a tax-deductible donation, that person may write a check to "COPS 8, Inc" with "Ainsworth Benefit" written in the memo section, and mail or drop it off to B.B. St. Roman at the NOPD 8th District Station, 334 Royal Street, New Orleans, LA 70130. It will then be credited to the Ainsworth Benefit Account and the person will receive an acknowledgment with the Federal Tax ID Number.

Superintendent Serpas said, "Mr. Ainsworth was a longtime supporter and volunteer to the NOPD's COPS 8 program, which provides assistance to the officers of the 8th District. The members of the 8th District station sincerely appreciated his efforts to fix up the station by painting and repairing various things in the building. He'll be missed."

NOPD detectives continue to actively investigate this case in an effort to identify the perpetrator.
