It's a big day for foodies, as the only day we eat more than we do on Super Bowl Sunday is Thanksgiving, according to the USDA. And here in New Orleans people tell me they'll be having all the traditional football favorites, like "Chicken wings, nachos, burgers, pizza." But then there will be a local flavor, as some people plan gumbo and King Cake.
And even though last year's game was the most watched TV program ever in history, nearly two-thirds of the country don't watch the Super Bowl. Broken hearted fans perhaps? A local karate teacher told me he's working that day, and people will be in class because, "There's not a lot of interest this year 'cause the Saints didn't make it."
And on the second most gluttonous day of the year a lot of people will be hitting the local take-out place.
The National Restaurant Association estimates that 48 million Americans will order takeout or delivery food from a restaurant on Super Bowl Sunday. They say in addition, 12 million are expected to visit a restaurant or bar to watch the big game. Altogether, that's close to half the amount of people who watched last year's game.
While salsa and dips remain #1 according to the National Restaurant Association, chicken wings have overtaken pizza to be the second favorite Super Bowl food that is ordered from a restaurant.
