The month we just completed was one of the warmest Januaries on record. Not since 1974 has Louisiana been this warm in January, tying the record set that month as the second warmest.
"The last 60 or so years, this has been quite extraordinary," said Louisiana climatologist Barry Keim, who said only January 1950 was warmer.
Why was it so warm? La Nina, of course. Keim says that means instead of arctic air coming south from Canada, we get warmer Pacific air coming from the west.
"These Canadian air masses, when they arrive here, are severely cold, much, much colder than this air coming over the Pacific Ocean," Keim explained.
Keim says February has the potential to be more wintery for us.
"February is notorious for delivering some of the coldest air ever experienced in Louisiana," Keim said.
