Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says that a female South Lafourche High School teacher stands accused of engaging in sexual conduct with a 17-year-old male student.
He says 29 year old Heather Chiasson, was charged on Friday, January 20 and that the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is working in conjunction with the Lafourche Parish School Board in connection with these allegations.
According to the Sheriff, after learning about the possibility of an alleged sexual relationship, detectives made contact with the 17-year-old male student on Friday. During an interview with detectives, he says the student gave a detailed account of the sexual relationship he had with Chiasson, who had taught the student last year.
The student alleged that a "flirtatious relationship" began between the two says Webre, resulting in sexual activity, including sexual intercourse.
The student also showed detectives numerous text messages exchanged with Chiasson, Webre says, some of which contained text of a graphic sexual nature.
Detectives attempted to question Chiasson according to the Sheriff, but she refused to speak to them about the matter.
Chiasson was charged with Prohibited Sexual Conduct between an Educator and a Student, a misdemeanor. Penalties for a first offense of this crime include a fine of not more than $1,000.00 or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews, says, "While I cannot comment on personnel issues, the Lafourche Parish School Board takes very seriously all such allegations and will swiftly act to take appropriate administrative action. She has been suspended from her position with the Lafourche Parish School Board, pending the results of the investigation of the allegations made against her."
She added, "Once the school district’s personnel department and the school’s administration complete an investigation, a final determination of her employment status will be announced."
The news release says, "Chiasson was charged with Prohibited Sexual Conduct between an Educator and a Student (RS 14:81.4), a misdemeanor. "
